I live with artists. Two of ‘em. If you have ever lived with or known an artist you would probably agree with me that they can see art where “normal” people like myself, can’t.
Take this Picasso piece, for instance:
This looks like a kindergarten class had fun with crayons, at least to me. Frankly, I don’t see any artistic value in this at all.
During the course of my education I had to take an art class. It was, without a doubt, the most miserable experience I have ever had. I’d rather take a math class (and I abhor math). Unfortunately the class only focused on famous painters and we were supposed to interpret what the paintings meant. It was tough because in my mind, most of the paintings meant “I have no talent” and that was simply not an answer that was going to get me an “A.”
Fortunately for me, the two artists in my house have pointed out that art is much more than paintings. Sure, painters are artists (and my wife is fantastic as none of her works look like they’ve been attacked by Crayola markers), but so are musicians, writers, poets, sketchers, thespians, gardeners, and photographers (to name a few).
I love photography – especially in the digital age where I don’t have to mess with dark rooms and chemicals.
Now this is art:
This I can get into. So I was going through some old photos and playing around with my little Olympus Stylus 850SW camera and thought I’d share a couple of photos.

Now I’m doing some research on a good digital camera, one that I can carry with me on hikes (that isn’t too bulky or heavy). I love my Olympus and it worked like a champ while I hiked the Appalachian Trail. But to get some really artistic shots, I’m going to need something better.
So far I’m leaning toward the Fujifilm HS20 Finepix as a relatively inexpensive (compared to other cameras) new machine.
But first, I want to learn more about digital photography. As I learn and experiment, I’ll post some photos to see how it goes.
