So I’ve been doing some reading about digital photography and have been playing around with my little camera. There are some cool effects you can do in software designed for photographs.

I’m finding myself partial to black & white photography. For some reason, “old” pictures speak to me moreso than full-blown colour.

Here are a couple of black & white shots:

Basic Shed

This photo was shot from about 12′ away. I changed it to a black & white photo using the Olympus software that came with my camera. I’m thinking a camera with a higher pixel rate will get close enough to show the wood grain.

Building in downtown Richmond

This one is cool because I was able to emphasize the shadow of the tree splayed across the building. I didn’t notice this as much in the colour photo but when I changed it to black & white, the shadow really popped.

The software I have also has a feature called “disorientation.” You can muck with an image and either make it concave or convex. I tried this with another building shot I took in downtown Richmond:

Looking up at a six story building

I used the concave distortion setting here. I also sharpened the photo in an attempt to capture the mortar outlines of the individual bricks.

While waiting for a presentation in a conference room, I put my camera in my lap facing up and shot a picture of the ceiling without using the flash:

Camera pointed at ceiling, no flash

The light play off the camera lens is pretty interesting. Nothing spectacular, but interesting nonetheless.

I’ll keep posting photos I think are unique as they emerge.
